Motorola banks on Android to save business
Please Google, can we join your club?
We've said it before and we'll say it again - 2009 is the year of the Android phone. And if Motorola has its way, you'll be handing over your hard-earned cash for a Motorola Android phone.
Motorola has just announced a quarterly loss of $3.6 billion, with mobiles taking the biggest hit - mobile device sales were down 51 per cent compared to the previous year as we all stopped sliding and flipping, preferring instead to get smart with the numerous new smartphones on the market. And Moto wants a piece of that action, promising its own Android-based phones before the year is out.
Will it work? Analysts already doubt it, especially as just about every phone maker on the planet will be pushing an Android by the summer. According to Avi Greengart of Current Analysis: 'If you come out with a plain vanilla Android phone in the second half, you're no better off.'
And judging by Motorola's recent efforts, it's unlikely that its Android phone will offer anything more than average looks and functionality. Please prove us wrong Motorola - we'd hate to see you go.
