MobileMe update: new details back April launch

MobileMe

Existing users will get support for another year as Apple readies update.

Once again chatter about Apple’s plans to reboot its MobileMe service is sweeping the web, with a new report claiming Cupertino will unleash its new offering in April. Previous rumours have suggested it would be revealed at a special iOS 5 event next month.

iLounge says it’s got word from a “trusted source” who says the tech supplier at the educational institute where they work has said Apple is no longer offering paid-for MobileMe subscriptions. Students should instead get the free 60 day trial package, with a new version launching next month.

What’s more, the source says the current edition of MobileMe will be supported for another year. That points to the upgrade being a significant shift from the current iteration, and that punters may need to sign up all over again for the service if they wish to continue using it.

Previous chatter has suggested MobileMe will be gratis, offering a digital locker for stashing music, movies and files. Some have even claimed that there’ll be a personal website for each user, with love video streaming and status updates, making MobileMe more of a social network.

Stay tuned right here and to our Twitter and Facebook pages for more on this story as it happens.
