Mobile operators to block prostitutes' phone numbers

Vodafone, Orange, O2, 3, Virgin and T-Mobile to help make London a cleaner city

CEOs from various mobile operators are expected to discuss the issue of blocking prostitutes' phone numbers along with Metropolitan Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, Bristish Telecom and several female spokespeople this October.

You would've seen the calling cards left in telephone boxes before - though we're not suggesting you've called them! - but finally mobile operators are going to crack down on the illegal trade in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics. It's not an attempt to shield innocent tourists' eyes from the nefarious underworld of London, it's actually after growing concerns about the number of women being trafficked into our fine country from poor countries.

Athens faced a similar problem before the 2004 Olympics, with the number of women trafficked into the country doubling. It's a real concern for London, but with any luck mobile operators will address the issue after the meeting two months from now. “The Mayor wants to see an agreement reached between mobile phone operators and the police that would see these numbers taken out of use as soon as they are identified, cutting off a key source of income for these gangs," Kit Malthouse, the Deputy Mayor for Policing, commented.

"We need the mobile phone operators to show their commitment to fighting the abuse of women and help us. We want companies like Vodafone, Orange, O2, 3, Virgin and T-Mobile to make it difficult for the pimps and traffickers who advertise their mobile numbers on these cards to do business by barring them.”

What a lot of tripe and infringement on people's rights. What business is it of the Met or indeed the Mayor, whom I hol din high regard by the way, to determine what people wish to in private? NONE!!! These women are earning a living and not leeching off the state and that of course annoys Gordon who wants the whole nation to be dependent on his handouts!!!
