Microsoft Zune to launch in the UK
Zune movie downloads for Xbox 360, but no word yet on a UK Zune HD release
For the first time since launch in 2006, Microsoft has decided to sell and back Zune-branded products outside the US. It’s been a long time coming, but the announcement will see the brand hit 18 of the world’s biggest markets, including the UK.
Before you get too excited though, we must point out that we’ve heard nothing concrete about the Zune HD personal media player being launched within these shores. Instead, the ‘Zune’ we’re being told we’ll see refers to the remodelled movie and music streaming and download service about to hit the Xbox 360.

On its initial launch, the Zune was an MP3 player designed to beat Apple’s iPod at its own game. Nearly four years later, and Zune only owns 2 per cent of the US MP3 market – nowhere near the iPod’s 73 per cent monopolising.
With that in Mind, Microsoft has decided to focus its energy on turning Zune into a bigger brand; a “three screens” (PC, TV, mobile) approach being the way forward. With this in mind, the way you watch movies on Xbox LIVE will change from Tuesday. Firstly you’ll be able to stream them right off without downloading, and secondly that it’ll all be packaged under the ‘Zune’ brand. LIVE users will also be able to access Facebook and Twitter.
Microsoft’s general TV, video and music manager marketing Christine Heckart says of the change: “The strategy and vision of Zune is to continue to build out that full entertainment experience. This is a very important step for us to introduce Zune to new consumers around the world.”
So it’s good news in some respects, but exceedingly little’s been said about the chances of us in the UK seeing the Zune HD media player hit stores any time soon. We’ll keep you posted.
