Microsoft working on secret WP7 and Windows 8 project

Head of Windows Phone business moved to new role

Andy Lees has been moved away from leading the charge with Windows Phone 7 instead being put to work on a 'time critical' job for Ballmer

Andy Lees, the current head of Windows Phone is being moved to work on what could be a crossover project that will see Windows Phone and Windows 8 brought together.

In an internal memo discovered by AllThingsD the correspondence was from Ballmer stating that Andy Lees would be moving from his current role into one where he would be reporting to the CEO directly.

"I have asked Andy Lees to move to a new role working for me on a time-critical opportunity focused on driving maximum impact in 2012 with Windows Phone and Windows 8,"

While it's not known what this project could be it seems logical to assume that it would involve joining the two operating systems closer together, especially after rumours have pointed towards the Nokia Lumia 900 coming with a new version of Windows Phone.

What do you think this new opportunity will be, could it be a new version of Windows Phone or something that see's the two operating systems sync better? Let us know what you think via the comments box below...
