Microsoft Windows 8 launches today

Full details on next-gen operating system expected

Will we see the world's first Windows 8 tablet?

Microsoft will today reveal its new Windows 8 operating system in full, at the Build conference in California. The tech press is rife with rumour and speculation about what to expect, with the OS having been teased over the summer.

What we do know is that Windows 8 will run on tablets as well as PCs. That means Microsoft is aiming to take on the might of Apple’s iPad with its new software, while also looking to shore up its PC dominance at the same time.

While screen shots have already shown a Windows Phone-like design, details about how the likes of Word, Excel and Powerpoint will run on Windows 8 remain a mystery.

We’ll be bringing you all the news emerging from the Build conference as it happens. The conference starts today at 5pm UK time.
