Microsoft Surface officially launches in the UK

Coasters and magazines extra

Well, we got hands-on with the Microsoft Surface back in January and now you can too, as the Surface has been officially launched in the UK, as well as in 11 other European markets. But there is a downside - you'll need the best part of £10,000 spare to bag one.

If you do, we can guarantee you'll have the coolest coffee table on the street, not to mention access to a touchscreen computer as you watch the TV and drink your brew. Microsoft no doubt hopes the Surface will eventually become the 'hub' of the family living room, able to interact with a number of people simultaneously, all with the ability to 'grab' digital information from the screen, whether it's music, media or film. And it's not just about hands - you can even update your mobile phone or MP3 player simply by placing it on the 'table'. And as for gaming...well...let's just say Monopoly will never be the same again.

That £10,000 price tag probably rules it out as a purchase for most of us right now, but that doesn't mean you'll not be seeing one very soon. Microsoft has apparently received an 'overwhelming response from companies worldwide' following the first unveiling of the Surface. Which could mean a number of these techno-tables hitting the high street in the very near future, ready and able to update your phone or to give you the lowdown on the latest products. If that means an end to queuing on a Saturday afternoon, we're all for it.
