Microsoft launches Bing search engine
New search contender from Microsoft
Microsoft has confirmed that it is to launch a new search engine, dubbed Bing.
The latest challenge to Google's almost complete dominance of the search market is set to debut on June 3. Bing will initially soft launch in the UK, with most initial emphasis on the US.
Redmond claims that the new consumer-focussed engine will understand what users are looking for and provide fewer, more targeted results in a new display format.
The company claims planned developments include ‘Web Groups’, a more visually intuitive presentation which enables people to quickly get from knowledge to action, and ‘Quick Tabs’, a contents table for categories of Search results.
Paul Stoddart, UK Search Lead, Microsoft, said: “Bing is being built in the UK over the next six to twelve months based on consumer insights and is designed to help people find the shortest distance from their initial search query to the point of making an informed decision.”
The new entrant faces a crowded market however, following the recent launch of Wolfram Alpha.
