Microsoft Bing licensing Wolfram Alpha

Will this be enough to topple Google? Should we bother asking?

Wolfram Alpha set out to be the search engine for brainiacs. Its search results are all about proper fact-based information, not trying to sell people vaguely related junk, and it fleshes it out with other useful info that might help you in your intellectual life.

Wolfram Alpha earned itself some decent hype around its launch, but our initial optimism waned when we realised that when we typed in things like ‘Wolfenstein’, we didn’t actually give to figs about a sparsely populated town in east Germany. It couldn’t even tell us the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow. The ninny.

So Wolfram Alpha’s team has spent the summer editing two million lines of code and sniffing out 54,000 bugs to make things better. And it did one other thing too: it met Microsoft.

Microsoft has also been busy in the search field of late, and has launched a new search engine called Bing. Bing has gotten off to a flying start and its quality of search is certainly up there with the best of them. But it isn’t different or better enough to leaves us asking ‘Whoogle?’. It’s basically the same deal with a slightly better image search and the word Bing at the top.

But Bing and Wolfram Alpha together might have a better chance. And, according to new reports, Bing and Wolfram Alpha have entered an agreement that will see Wolfram Alpha results appear when you search Bing. So you get all your usual array of web nonsense through Bing and the serious factoids from Wolfram.

We don’t know when this arrangement will begin to bear fruit, or how it will be laid out or branded when it does, but when these two search powers combine, Google might have to start thinking very seriously about its position as search top dog.
