LOVEFiLM rental service announced for Sony PS3

Monthly movie subscription lands on PlayStation

LOVEFiLM and PlayStation join forces

LOVEFiLM, Europe’s largest DVD and games rental company has confirmed that it is to bring its subscriptions based rental service to the Sony PlayStation 3 confirming a spate of recent rumours.

The latest addition to the LOVEFiLM package will allow subscribers to stream movies direct from their PS3 consoles much like the Netflix package available to PlayStation owners in the US. The £5.99 per month service will be included at no extra charge for current LOVEFiLM subscribers using the postal services.

LOVEFiLM CEO Simon Calver spoke excitedly about the new Sony service stating: "To become PS3's partner for our service is a tremendous endorsement of the value, choice and convenience offered by LOVEFiLM.” He added: "This is game-changing for LOVEFiLM and transformational for the UK home entertainment market as a whole.”

With Sony already offering its own movie download service through the PlayStation Network, the arrival of LOVEFiLM on the PS3 has surprised some. With more than 1.4million subscribers, however, this joint venture could prove highly beneficial for both parties.
