Linn declares death of the CD

Death knell for the old format

As of 2010 Linn, the legendary hi-fi system manufacturer, will cease the production of CD players. It's the first company to announce that it'll exit the market, but T3 predicts it is bound to be the first of many.

The company will now focus on producing digital music streaming products. Linn also hinted it would begin creating its own high-end music to download.

Linn saw its digital products overtake the archaic CD player in 2009, and Managing Director, Gilad Tiefenburn commented: " Our customers have fast recognised the limitations of CD players and in the age of home networking, people now want better control of their music and the ability to enjoy it in any room of their home."

Is this another sign that we might soon see the CD as one of the dead tech we would like to resurrect?
