LG launches world's first eyestrain-minimising monitor

Automatic brightness is easier on eye

We're no strangers to long days (and nights) in front of a computer screen, so anything to alleviate strain on the old eyeballs is more than welcome. Which is where the LG W53 series monitor comes in.

It's being boldly advertised as the 'world’s first eyestrain-minimising monitor', using 'automatic brightness control technology' to optimise the picture settings and the brightness of the screen based on the light in the room and the content being viewed. And just to make extra sure that you're not burning the life out of your eyes, LG is even throwing in a timer that reminds you to take a break at predetermined intervals. It's good to know someone is looking out for you, although LG makes an unlikely guardian angel.

Outside of saving your sight, the W53 isn't a bad monitor either, offering 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution, a 16:9 aspect ratio, a Digital Fine Contrast (DFC) ratio of up to 50,000:1, a 2ms response time and if you love your movies, a Cinema Mode that blocks out online video distractions (including pop up adverts) by blacking out everything except for the video clip. But if you need to access a control, the monitor’s bezel detects when a hand is approaching the screen and activates lights to make buttons easy to find. Clever stuff.

Screens in the W53 series range from 18.5-inch to a whopping 27-inch and should be available from May in the UK for an as-yet undisclosed price.
