Platform had already been chosen by LG to power its smart TVs
LG buys WebOS from HP
LG has bought WebOS from HP, reinforcing its support for the operating system as the basis of its smart TVs.
The sale was made following HP’s announcement that all future tablets will be based on Android and Windows.
HP originally bought WebOS from Palm in 2010, announcing a number of products that would run it. Less than a year later, the company dropped those plans and shelved development of the OS.
LG has already announced WebOS-based smart TVs. The move – which sees it acquire the source code, all documentation, and engineers – gives LG complete control over the future development of the platform.
