Konami announces Metal Gear Solid Touch for iPhone
Still no MGS4 for Xbox 360, sorry
After a big teaser campaign, Konami has finally taken the wraps off its next Metal Gear Solid enterprise. Unfortunately for Xbox 360 owners, the platform to get your next Metal Gear fix will be the iPhone (and iPod Touch, we’re assuming). The game is due out in Spring, 2009.
Metal Gear Solid Touch is an original game that will feature the world and characters of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. You’ll get eight stages from the outset, but Konami also promises that more will be made available later on. Fans of the series will be able to unlock images and wallpapers for their handsets by earning points from playing the game.
As the name implies, the game will be completely controlled by touchscreen, which Konami claims will make it “simple for anyone to move their alignment or switch to zoom mode.” For all its strengths, Metal Gear games have always suffered a little from complex controls, so it could make for a tricky transition. The mobile gaming aficionados at PocketGamer are also wondering if UK developer Ideaworks3D might be involved in production, following its success with previous mobile adaptations of Metal Gear Solid.
Konami also announced a number of other iPhone plans, including Dance Dance Revolution S Lite, Silent Hill: The Escape and Frogger, which are due for release shortly. With all these big franchises now confirmed for a mobile phone platform, instead of say the Sony PSP or Nintendo DS, this could be a sign that dedicated handheld gaming platforms are soon to be a thing of the past...
