It was only yesterday that those programme sharing chaps at the Beeb were promising to widen their popular iPlayer doors to the media player market, and just a day later Sony are the first to strike while the iPlayer iron is hot to announce download capability for their latest MP3 players.

Sony's new Walkman S series and E series Walkman Mp3 players unveiled at this year's IFA 2008 conference, will give you the opportunity to cram episodes of Clarkson berating caravan drivers and the Stig ripping up the track in a new Ferrari for the pricely sum of nothing.

Getting the shows onto your Walkman are fool-proof. Just select your chosen television fancy from the last seven days of the Beeb schedule and import into your standard Windows media player, then transfer to your Walkman and avert your usually wandering eyes on the commute to work to Saturday night's Match of the Day.

Sony look like they have stolen a march on its rivals with the prized possession of iPlayer compatibility, which will surely ensue in some schoolyard style boasting.
