iPhone PC tethering coming soon
Will O2 follow At&T's lead?
One of the few serious niggles about the iPhone 3G is that now it has the super fast mobile broadband connection, you still can’t use it to act as a proper 3G modem for your PC.
If you’re out with your laptop and want to share your 3G connection to browse the web on a proper screen, then at the moment you’re out of luck unless you’re using a jailbroken handset. An application that made it possible was available for a very short spell through the App Store, but it was then removed. Boo.
However, in the US, network provider AT&T has revealed that it’s planning some software to allow users to tether their handsets to a PC for use as a modem. Sadly this means that for the moment, the option will only be available to users in the US. However, it doesn’t seem to impertinent to wonder if O2 might do the same, especially if the demand is there.
And hey, there can’t be anything wrong with getting a little extra revenue from data fees, surely?

As the O2 contract includes (theoretically) unlimited data plans, I really hope they allow this. Most of the time when I'm out I use my iphone for internet access but there are times when I could really do with accessing the web on my laptop.
