iPhone on sale at Orange today
Orange can't give you better prices than O2, but they can offer the promise of no dropped calls, excellent 3G coverage and even Orange Wednesdays
As of today, iPhone fans don't have to flock to O2 to get their fix. The mobile network Orange is selling the iPhone from today in the UK, with prices not much different than what O2 offers.
Nonetheless, Orange can entice customers with the promise of better 3G coverage, no dropped calls and even the Orange Wednesdays iPhone app. There is just one catch - Orange is fixing the monthly data limit to just 750MB.
Orange spokesperson Conor Maples has defended his company's data limit on Twitter, saying “750MB is actually quite a lot of Mobile Data too - it's about 5 hours of video downloaded from YouTube, 75,000 mobile web pages or...”, going on to say in his next tweet “...30,000 normal web pages....it's 250 full music tracks (if an average a track is about 3mb) or 1500 mobile games...”
Vodafone is the next network to jump onboard the iPhone wagon, reportedly selling the iPhone from January. They haven't yet announced pricing details, although a pricing war is no longer expected after Orange's iPhone tariffs failed to impress.
Starting at £29.36 on either a 24-month or 18-month contract, customers will receive 150 minutes and 250 texts a month, with the phone costing nothing upfront. The next jump up for either an 18-month or 24-month contract is £34.26, where you can expect to receive 600 minutes and 500 texts a month. £44.04 a month will get you 1,200 minutes and 500 texts on either an 18-month or 24-month contract, and further contracts are available for anyone wishing to spend any more. Pay as you go plans require a payment of £333 upfront for the iPhone 3G model.
Pick up the iPhone 3G or 3GS from today, at either an Orange store, Phones 4 U or Carphone Warehouse, where the Oxford Street branch has created an installation in the window of hundreds of orange-coloured apples.
