iPhone gets a launch date

Apple's latest greatest set to hit US shelves on June 16th?

One month on from its launch, Apple appears to have moved closer to a definite release date for the iPhone. They've asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over in the US to keep schtum about some of the life-changing cell's top secrets until June 15th. This could mean that iPhone hungry US citizens will be mauling each other to get their hands on the tasty gadget from June 16th.

Steve Jobs and friends have told the FCC not to reveal anything about their killer toy's user manual, internal setup, external photos and test set up photos. It seems they're a bit tetchy, understandably, that unscrupulous rip-off merchants, not to mention major competitors, will get hold of this information early and set to work on trying to emulate their crowning achievement.

To add fuel to the fire, Cingular, the iPhone's chosen network, have sent out an email confirming June as the month for touchdown.

If this date is correct, then expect lots of excitable Americans queuing through the night, and, more enticingly for us in the UK, the chance of getting a firm arrival date soon, probably some time in November. We can but hope.
