iPad 2: final rumours swirl ahead of launch

SD slot dumped but source reconfirms design and spec changes

Engadget's insider reckons iPad 2 will be just as everyone expects.

Just because we all know the iPad 2 is being unleashed on 2 March doesn’t mean the rumour mill is grinding to a halt. Far from it. And the latest gossip does seem to nail down a few last minute changes to the next-gen slate.

Engadget’s inside source, which it says has been spot on with Apple specs in the past, most notably 11th hour changes to the recent Apple TV upgrade, has come through with a few tweaks and Apple’s final plans for the iPad 2.

The SD slot, apparently nailed on, has now be dropped the source says. A Retina Display, so long a bone of contention among iPad 2 gossipmongers, won’t be there either. However, an A5 chip, bumped up from the current A4 model, and 512MB RAM are definitely on their way.

The design is also said to be substantially thinner, backing up those mock-ups which came out of Japan earlier this week. What’s more, it seems iOS 5 is set to be outed next week, with a few details trailed before devs get their hands on it.

We’l be bringing you live coverage of the iPad 2 launch event on 2 March, so stay tuned for all the news as it happens.
