HTC Hero Android 2.1 Eclair update by end of June
Sense UI also updated to include new features.
The agonising wait for Android 2.1 Éclair on the HTC Hero is finally over with the company confirming it will roll out the new version of the OS by the end of June.
The update brings live wallpapers, Google Maps Navigation and an improved Android Market interface as well as a new version of the popular HTC Sense UI, featuring Friend Stream, News Stream, Leap, and live weather animations (see video link below).
HTC has just confirmed to T3 that the update will go out to SIM-free, Orange and T-Mobile, who rebranded the device as the G2 Touch, users "towards the end of the month" and will be a two-part process.
An additional statement from the company reads: "Android Éclair update for HTC Hero will be released by the end of June. The upgrade will come in two parts, the first of which will roll out from this week and will be detected when the Hero next automatically checks for software updates.
"The second part of the update will follow towards the end of the month. As the second part of the upgrade will wipe all data on the handset, Hero users should ensure any important data has been backed up before proceeding with the installation.
Due to the size of the update, wherever possible, we would advise using a WiFi connection for this download to avoid additional data charges."
Hero owners, have been stuck with v1.5 since 2009, while new handsets like the HTC Desire, HTC Legend and Google Nexus one have arrived loaded with the new operating system.
