GPS iPhone next year?

Rumours persist that Apple's multi-talented mobile will be adding a Satnav string to its bow next year.

iPhone's just weeks away from launch in the US and already the Apple rumour mill has turned its attention to its next incarnation.

According to the optimistic guys at AppleTechNews , "the next iPhone, probably due out at Macworld or early spring of '08, will incorporate a GPS receiver chip"

Citing an unnamed source, they go on to claim Apple will use assisted GPS technology, where location data is gathered from mobile phone masts as well as satellites for a faster fix on the iPhone's position.

It's also thought that a GPS-packing iPhone could deliver traffic updates on the move, something we've already seen hinted at in the current model's Google Maps application.

We've seen plans from Apple for GPS-based kit before, and its recent theft-protection patent pointed towards a device that could tell it was being moved.

Will a GPS-toting iPhone make an appearance in just over a year's time? Who knows. This time last year the iPhone itself was a myth, so anything's possible. Keep it here for more information on the iPhone as its launch date approaches.
