A new and improved version of that super-tough smartphone staple, Gorilla Glass, is set to debut at CES
Corning, the manufacturers of Gorilla Glass - which protects top end smartphone displays from the iPhone 4S to the Samsung Galaxy S2 - have announced its successor will be unveiled at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
"Corning Gorilla Glass has been a tremendous success for Corning, enjoying excellent market acceptance across mobile device industries." Said James Steiner, Corning's senior vice president general manager. "Handset and tablet device manufacturers are clearly driving toward higher functionality from thinner designs. Corning’s latest innovation in Gorilla Glass technology is very well positioned to meet these challenges." Details on exactly what's new with the second generation Gorilla Glass will be announced by Corning on Monday, January 9th. Expect the usual bevvy of statistics on toughness, lightness and thin-ness.
While there's no hint at which future handsets will make use of Corning's latest tough-as-nails screen technology, the company has said that the great and the good of the tech world will get a chance to try out Gorilla Glass 2 for themselves at the Corning booth at CES (#12642 Centrall Hall, since you asked).
