Google Chrome gets full launch
But still no Mac version
Google doesn't dispense with beta status lightly. A quick glance at your Gmail page and you'll notice beta status still prevails almost five years after launch. So we're guessing Google must be confident that the Chrome browser is finally the real deal.
Now out of beta, Google Chrome has apparently reached the performance and stability levels demanded by the online giant, with 14 updates since launch resulting in a browser that's now 50 per cent faster, more secure and free of early audio and video glitches. And of course, it's had some serious 'hands on' testing too - 10 million people in 200 countries have downloaded (and presumably used) Chrome.
But that's not the end of the story. Google is planning to add auto-fill boxes to Chrome, along with RSS support and a Firefox-style add-on development area. It's also got one eye on the Mac too, with Chrome product manager Anders Sandholm admitting 'internally there is huge pressure' to get the browser on Macs as soon as possible. And it might well be appearing on your next PC - Google hinting at distribution deals with major manufacturers. More on that in 2009 no doubt.
