Step forward tournament.com . The new site is aiming to steal away all your precious post-work hours, but with the not insubstantial reward of letting you play all comers at games including Counterstrike for cold hard cash.

The new site has struck a deal with Valve, meaning you can go mano-o-mano on titles such as Half Life. All you need to do is get a group together, register, deposit some dosh and get down to it.

Using a system called Tournament Smart Rank, in the style of Microsoft's TrueSkill on Xbox Live, gamers won't ever have to suffer the ignominy of being battered by those far better than them. Everyone plays those of a similar level.

There's also a social networking element so you can see exactly how good you are and who's been taking you down in virtual reality.
