First eBooks for children released by award-winning authors

Mummy can I have an eBook please?

A company called Sleepydog has decided to tap into the iPhone app market by launching a range of children’s eBooks by award winning authors such as Steve Skidmore and Steve Barlow.

With the new generation of kiddywinks being very tech savvy, books are no longer high up on the list of favourite pastimes. Sleepydog CEO Toby Moores aims to make reading fashionable again by “updating old media into digital format”. The choice to launch the eBooks using Apple’s format is no coincidence either. The publisher is hoping to capitalise on the phenomenal success of both the iPhone and iPod Touch, which makes sense as there aren’t many children walking around with an e-reader tucked under their arm.

The books are formatted specifically for children, making them easy to read. There's a maximum of 6 lines of text per page and each book also comes with an interactive quiz at the end to provide some entertainment.

Currently there are eleven titles to download, each priced at £1.19. They include the adventures of boy-genius Vernon Bright, the tongue in cheek parody Star Bores and King Arthur-inspired series Tales of the Dark Forest. The library is set to continue expanding with new titles such as Colin the Barbarian coming soon. An app to purchase for entertaining your kids this weekend, if ever we saw one.
