Facebook iPhone app users only 44 million

Not the 100 million Facebook reported earlier this week

Headline figure still huge, but app not on every single iOS device ever.

Facebook has clarified the number of users of its winning iPhone app, saying that rather than being 100 million, as first suggested via the app’s official page on the site, it’s actually more like 44 million.

That’s still a mighty impressive figure, considering Apple had sold 59 million iPhones by June of this year. That 44 million active users, though, is across all iOS devices, including iPod touch and iPad.

In a statement, Facebook said, “There are currently 44 million monthly active users of the Facebook for iPhone app. We recently changed the definition of mobile active users to exclude those who have only liked or commented on stream stories. Instead we are counting "active" users as people who have taken explicit actions within an application.”

That clears that up then. And while the epic 100 million may now be bunkum, it still seems as if Facebook is surging ahead of its rivals.
