Evidence mounts for January iPhone

An American network's signed the iPhone as an exclusive handset for the first half of next year. That means it's just months away!

Ok, so this is another burst of rampant speculation gas from the bowels of the interweb, but it's still an encouraging morsel for the Apple faithful to chew over.

According to internet rumour mongers, the mythical handset will make its debut in January, exclusively available Stateside on the Cingular network until July.

That's the same network that snapped up the first iTunes-enabled phone, Motorola's ROKR, when it was announced back in September last year.

According to fansite ThinkSecret, the network's renewed its love-in with Apple, although there's no word on who'll get the handset on this side of the pond.

O2 scored the ROKR on British shores when it first emerged, although that's no guarantee it'll be lucky this time round.

We were expecting an iPhone launch next year already. Financial whiz kids reckon the Cupertino firm's being cute and waiting for its rivals to lay the groundwork for music phones before launching its own to play on the iPod brand.

Whichever way the iPhone saga ends here in the UK, we've cleared a space in our pockets, and a space on our desk for what could be the most integrated mobile and computer experience we've ever seen.
