E3 2012: Nintendo announces 23 Wii U games but no console pricing

After the Wii U GamePad announcement on Sunday, Nintendo follows up with a host of new first and third party games for the next generation console

After the surprise announcement on Sunday confirming the Wii U GamePad, Nintendo used its E3 2012 press conference to unveil 23 Wii U games and a few more details about the console but crucially, did not reveal any details about pricing.

Like Sony did at its E3 2012 press conference, Nintendo put the emphasis on games and announced third party titles like Batman Arkham City Armored Edition, Mass Effect 3, Aliens Colonial Marines, Assassin's Creed 3 and a brilliant looking open world game Lego City Undercover which also has a 3DS version in the works.

New Wii U features and specs

Nintendo did elaborate on a few more Wii U features including the fact that it will support two GamePads at once and that the tablet-like controller will feature buttons on the back and a rumble feature which instantly makes us think of the Nintendo 64 controller. YouTube, Hulu and Amazon Video services will also be on board for the Wii U when it arrives at the end of the year.

We now also know that the console base which measures in at 6.8 inches long and 1.8-inches high, will be powered by an IBM Power based multi-core processor and support full HD graphics and video. There's compatibility with almost all of the games and accessories that you can buy for the Nintendo Wii too. In terms of storage, there's internal flash memory and support for external USB storage and SD memory cards. On the connectivity front you can access the internet wirelessly, while four USB 2.0 connectors means you can plug in Wii Lan adaptors.

One of the aspects of the Wii U that Nintendo mentioned in its streamed video earlier this week was Miiverse, and now we know that the interactive social world will be the first thing you see when you turn on your Wii U console. Owners can send text messages, use the stylus to write a message or even send screenshots with the idea of being able to communicate and interact with other Miis the key concept. The new Super Mario Bros U was demonstrated as one of the games that will see deeper integration of Miiverse allowing you to communicate during games.Miiverse will also be accessible from PCs, smartphones and the Nintendo 3DS.

Wii Fit U

After announcing that it had sold 43 million Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus devices, Nintendo officially announced Wii Fit U which can be used alongside the current Wii Fit devices to experience new exercises and routines, upload fitness data and workout on the Wii U GamePad while someone is watching the TV.

Nintendo 3DS games

Focusing on all things Wii U, Nintendo decided to keep 3DS game announcements to a minimum opting instead to save them for a streamed conference tomorrow at 10am UK time where it would unveil both first party and third party titles. We did however get to have a quick look at a 2D Super Mario Bros 2 game (Out August 19th in US), Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Disney Epic Mickey Power of Illusion and Scribblenauts Unlimited.

Wii U pricing

The real news we wanted though was finding out how much we will have to pay to get our hands on the Wii U, but Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said that more details about the Wii U would be saved for another time.
