iPad Mini: Consumers want cheaper tablet, survey finds

Apple iPad Mini draws consumer interest as survey highlights the growing demand of more portable and wallet-friendly tablets

More than half of consumers would consider buying a miniature version of Apple’s popular iPad tablet – but only if the price is right, according to a survey.

Of those questioned, 52 per cent said they’d consider buying an iPad Mini if it were priced between $249 and $300, the poll by price comparison site PriceGrabber.com found.

But only 22 per cent of the 2,603 people questioned owned a tablet.

Almost two-thirds said they’d choose the iPad Mini over the iPad or iPad 2 if it were cheaper, while a whopping 84 per cent cited a lower price-point as the feature they’d most like to see in the rumoured device.

More than half said they’d consider giving an iPad Mini as a gift if it donned a reasonable price tag.

The news comes amid growing speculation that Apple is gearing up to launch a miniature version of its tablet (otherwise known as the iPad Mini) in a bid to fend off competition from rivals Amazon, who successfully entered the tablet fray last year with the Kindle Fire.

Consumers also cited 3G connectivity (65 per cent) and a smaller size (60 per cent) among their most desired features, arguing that shaving inches off the device’s chassis will make it more portable.

Other features high on consumers’ priority list are a thin body (60 per cent), retina display (43 per cent), Siri (37 per cent), design (31 per cent) and an iOS 6 launch (30 per cent).

Apple iPad Mini: Rumours

Sources say Apple is gearing up to launch a 7.85-inch tablet with an identical pin-sharp resolution as the new iPad.

Two of Apple’s devoted iKit producers, Foxconn and Pegatron, will reportedly begin production on the suspected upcoming tablet soon.

Adding weight to the claims, Shaw Wu, an analyst at brokerage firm Sterne Agee, believes the release of a miniature iPad is likely, but it won’t be anytime soon.

He said: "We do not sense that the release of an iPad mini is imminent and quite frankly, exact timing is difficult to predict.

“However, we do believe it makes both fundamental and strategic sense for AAPL to address at some point."
