Cheaper high-end smartphones thanks to new quad-core processor?
With smartphones like the Galaxy S3 and HTC One X showing that power does cost a new chip by MediaTek could see the price of these iPhone-killers begin to drop
The first all-in-one quad-core processor has been built by MediaTek and could see high-end smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X drop in price as their components become cheaper to build.
Little-known in the consumer world MediaTek builds processors for the likes of Sony, Samsung, Huawei and more, all of whom are beginning to rely on faster and faster processors as the consumer expects faster more powerful smartphones to appear.
This will be the first time the company has built a smartphone processor but with a single chip offering both a processor, graphics chip and modem it could revolutionise the way companies build their smartphones hopefully resulting in upcoming phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 or even the S5 getting price cuts.
With the Google Nexus 4 proving that power doesn't have to be expensive thanks to its Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor the smartphone makers will now be looking to increase the power of their phones without hitting astronomical price points.
The chip has been developed for the Chinese market however it could potentially start another race by the manufacturers to create faster and cheaper processors after MediaTek has shown that it is possible.
