Casio's Exilim EX-Z450, EX-Z90, EX-Z280 and EX-Z33 compacts

Let the cameras do the hard work

Casio has four new compacts on the market, all of which are light on your pocket and able to take a decent snap with the minimum of effort. Take your pick from the Exilim EX-Z450, EX-Z90, EX-Z280 or the EX-Z33.

Both the Z450 and Z90 pack 12.1-megapixel sensors and alongside the usual Face Detection, also offer up Intelligent AF. What's that you ask? Well, if you happen to be taking a non-human photo (think family cat for example), the camera automatically determines the focus and exposure, bringing your preening pussy or prize pooch to the fore. Good news for posing pets everywhere. Might be useful when taking snaps of your spare goods for eBay too.

Other general features include a Landscape Mode for scenery shots, a Makeup Mode for blemish-free, magazine-like people snaps and a Handheld Night Scene function for better images with a shaky hand in the dark. A night out, we suspect they mean. Both also shoot HD (720p) movies, while the Z450 has a a wide-angle 28 mm, 4X optical zoom lens, the Z90 a 3X optical zoom lens. Prices for both still to be confirmed.

The Exilim Z280 also has a 12.1-megapixel sensor, along with 4x optical zoom with mechanical image stabiliser, 26mm wide-angle lens and a 2.7-inch widescreen TFT display. Many of the previously-mentioned features are here too, including HD movie shooting and that Makeup Mode, all packed into an incredibly slim casing. A good all-rounder that's unlikely to break the bank when it lands in the coming weeks.

Finally, the EX-Z33 is a very compact YouTube-friendly number, complete with 10.1-megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch widescreen LCD and an Auto Shutter function that takes a snap at the precise moment hand shake or subject movement ceases. It can also capture the moment a smile breaks out or a face hits the frame. To be honest, it could probably take the snap without you even being there. Other features include Automatic Face Recognition to capture specific people and that YouTube Capture Mode, which records and saves movies at the ideal settings for the video sharing site. Again, no price details, but we suspect this is at the lower end of the price spectrum.
