Carphone Warehouse frees laptops

Mass emancipation of Dells. Geordies and Mancs very happy.

The last useful thing we found in the street was an umbrella, and while admittedly it was a swanky brolly with pressy buttons, it's not a patch on what you'll be able to pick up from the pavement tomorrow.

The Carphone Warehouse is carelessly scattering 200 Dell laptops in the streets of Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton, like so much techie confetti.

The lappies are the same 15.4 inch widescreen Inspirons that the 'Warehouse is giving away to the first 200,000 subscribers to AOL broadband, and are ready to go with two years' worth of free broadband along with an Intel Celeron 540 processor, 1GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, Microsoft Vista Home Basic Edition and a DVD-RW 8x Optical Drive.

Should you find one of the £450 critters, you can register it with a store or just clutch it to your chest and shout "Mine, mine!" as you re-enact that bit from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and run home.

They're going to be distributed about the four cities on Thursday only and adorned with all the relevant logos and wings, just as you see here (and perhaps discreet labels saying 'It's OK officer, it's not a bomb').

Do we predict a riot? Er, yes, we do. See www.carphonewarehouse.com for more on the guerrilla-gifting day.
