Call of Duty loses annual entertainment crown to Adele
Gaming's biggest franchise Call of Duty has lost its crown of 'entertainment release of the year' with 2011's top honours going to Adele's album, 21
Activision's annually updated first person shooter Call of Duty has been beaten to the title of entertainment release of the year for the first time since 2008 with copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 being outsold by the album 21 by musician Adele.
Having been crowned the biggest entertainment release of the year for 2009 and 2010 in terms of units sold, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shifted around one million copies fewer than Adele's already iconic album in 2011 despite becoming the highest grossing entertainment offering of the year thanks to the title's premium price tag.
Showing the dominance and scale of the gaming market five or the year's 20 highest selling entertainment releases fell under the gaming banner with Second spot Modern Warfare 3 being joined by EA's FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3 in positions four and eleven respectively.
Completing the gaming contingent shock mega success and serial chart topper Zumba Fitness came in 16th whilst the All Format Gaming Chart Christmas number one Skyrim hit in 18th position.
