The booming, bearded actor that isBrian Blessed is to be the new voice of TomTom sat navs after a Facebook campaign group received 25,000 votes pleading for the king-sized personality to offer directions.

Originally created in 2008 by Manchester motorist Richard Gardner, the Brian Blessed for sat nav Facebook group lay relatively dormant until February this year when it saw an influx of traffic and received interest from sat nav manufacturers, TomTom.

Following TomTom’s confirmation that it would open negotiations with Blessed if the Facebook group received 25,000 members, Gardner contacted Blessed himself with the giant Yorkshire actor producing a film campaign to support the Facebook group and agreeing to lend his voice to the navigation tech.

Having breached the 25,000 mark and moved steadily onwards, TomTom has now confirmed that Blessed will become the next celebrity voice of its products joining the likes of John Cleese, Snoop Dogg, Darth Vader and Homer Simpson as option navigational settings.

Speaking following the announcement, Damian Woodward, TomTom’s UK VP of sales and marketing said: "Voices are becoming an ever more popular personalisation tool for our sat navs and it's been an interesting journey watching this particular campaign take shape.  It shows the power of social media, and if we can bring shouty happiness to over 25,000 people who are we to deny it?"
