Blu-ray Disc Association adding 3D support to players and movies
Basic Instinct: 3D Edition set to top Christmas 2011 sales charts
The BDA, arbiter of the official, ever-changing, and very, very nearly-finished-now specification of the Blu-ray format, has announced it's planning to introduce 3D support to movie playback.
The BDA is working toward finalising a spec that will require 1080p video to be delivered to each of your eyes via the currently popular polarised 3D video system - and it must, of course, result in discs that are backwards compatible with older players.
So these possible new BR-3D discs will have to include a standard, non-3D version of the film as well. Finally someone's getting good use of all that disc capacity.
The BDA will also insist that any new 3D players will also support older discs, so no one gets lumbered with an old piece of junk that won't play all the new stuff. The Blu-ray people have not committed to a date for the arrival of the first 3D Blu-ray discs, but we'd imagine Hollywood money-men are already preparing racks and racks of 3D reissues of their finest old tat.
