BlackBerry Storm update incoming

Not-so smartphone gets a shot in the arm

Well, Stephen Fry last week described the BlackBerry Storm as 'shockingly bad' and 'embarrassingly awful'. And you get the idea RIM was listening - or maybe suspected there were problems when the phone went to market.

Yes, just days after the phone hit the US (and a few weeks after the UK first saw it), the BlackBerry Storm is getting a major update. Don't worry, that much-hyped clickable screen is still there, only this time it's working in tandem with a new 4.7.0.76 software update.

What does that mean? Well, according to RIM insiders Boy Genius Report, the updated software means faster switching from portrait to landscape, an increase in battery to something like a full day, more responsive 'taps' on the screen, no more random reboots, faster media browsing and the addition of automatic text resizing. And more changes are expected before the new OS goes public.

Will the update be enough to pacify the Storm's fiercest critics? Probably not - but it might save RIM's dwindling reputation in the smartphone market.
