BlackBerry Storm 2 to include Wi-Fi, better touchscreen

Second time lucky for BlackBerry's divisive iPhone killer

According a source very close to BlackBerry, the smartphone maker is going to release a sequel to the BlackBerry Storm – the Storm 2 if you will – this September.

 

Although many of us greatly enjoyed RIM’s first touchscreen effort, many owners were left dissatisfied with the original Storm’s (pictured right) interface, particularly when trying to write long texts or emails, which is kind of BlackBerry’s raison d’être. Furthermore, prolonged use revealed a number of unfortunate software glitches and the lack of WiFi has been a constant black mark against the Storm’s good name.

As with most cutting edge tech, the best results tend to come after a bit of time in the marketplace. Take the iPhone 3G compared to the original iPhone, for example. So it is with RIM’s BlackBerry Storm, which is now rumoured to be undergoing some much needed upgrades and a second model will be launched this September.

 

The Storm 2 is expected to sport both WiFi connectivity and an improved touchscreen interface, which should nip most of the major gripes in the bud.

 

With RIM’s new App World for BlackBerry just launched, the Storm 2 could finally challenge the iPhone to its smartphone throne. But Apple has yet to make it’s hotly rumoured iPhone 3.0 announcement, so the summer is already looking set for another epic bout of smartphone warfare.
