All-important Wi-Fi addition could make it a contender

October seems like a key month in the smartphone calendar, if rumours are to be believed. If you believe everything that's doing the rounds, the iPhone will be available outside the O2 network, the Palm Pre will land on the O2 network and the BlackBerry Storm 2 will make its debut. Judging by the latest images, that's likely to be on the Vodafone network once more.

Those images, courtesy of benezblog.de, show the BlackBerry 2 (codenamed Odin here) in all its glory, admittedly not looking a great deal different to the original Storm, but scratch the surface and you'll see the vital missing ingredient that differentiates it from the earlier model - Wi-Fi connectivity. Earlier leaks also suggest an improved 3.2-megapixel camera, an improved touchscreen interface and integrated 'touch' buttons at the bottom end of that screen, while this one shows OS 5.0.0.138 for the operating system. But that might well change before the shelf date.

So a slight evolution of the first model which seems to just iron out the imperfections of RIM's original pioneering touchscreen. The photos show Storm 2 running on the German arm of Vodafone, but it's highly likely that the exclusive deal in the UK will continue with the new model. October is certainly looking like the perfect time for your mobile contract to end.
