Band bans smartphones from gig

Yeah Yeah Yeahs say No No No to fans recording its live performances

Art-punk trio the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have become the latest band to try and tackle the rise of people using their smartphones to record gigs.

Rather than taking the hard stance that some bands have taken in the past, it tried to appeal to its fans using posters.

"Please do not watch the show through a screen on your smart device/camera," read the sign at the entrance to the gig. "Put that...away as a courtesy to the person behind you and to [band members] Nick, Karen and Brian. Much love and many thanks! -- Yeah Yeah Yeahs."

According to Spin, who broke the story, Karen additionally pleaded with fans to just take pictures for the first two songs, then put their phones away.

It said that while there were a few violators that refused to listen to the band's pleas, the vast majority did indeed put their phones away.

The band later tweeted its pleasure that the majority of fans did put their phones away, saying it was a "massive and overwhelmingly [supportive]" response to its request.

Recent years have seen a number of technologies and techniques emerge to try and prevent fans from recording live performances.
