'Really fast' browsing a load of nonsense

If one thing is going to turn your head towards the iPhone 3G, it's that 'really fast' and whizzy web browsing so impressively demonstrated on the TV ad. Except that's not what you actually get.

Yes, Apple has had a serious knuckle-wrapping from the advertising standards watchdog (ASA) for that 'really fast' line, backed up by an image of a web page loading in under a second. The ASA claims it was 'likely to mislead' rather than being intentionally misleading, but has still demanded its removal from our screens in its current form. If it is replaced by a real representation from an average UK town, Apple just might need to book a slot longer than the traditional 30 seconds.

The company is pleading innocence, claiming the 'really fast' line was in comparison to the previous 2G model, as well as highlighting its 'Network performance will vary by location' disclaimer on the screen. Apple also pointed out that 'the average consumer' would realise the phone's performance would vary. The 17 people who successfully complained might want to think about that last statement.
