Apple iPhone 5 to pack 8MP camera?

Apple's camera woes finally at an end?

It's pretty much a given that the latest incarnation of the Apple iPhone, the iPhone 5, will make its debut at Apple's WWDC conference in June, but details about the device are thin on the ground (not that that's stopped us speculating).

However, Apple fans might at least have reason to celebrate over the traditionally shoddy camera. In a recent interview, Sony CEO Howard Stringer hinted to the Wall Street Journal that Sony might be gearing up to deliver Apple a boatload of 8MP cameras. Now what could they be for?

Traditionally the cameras in Apple products come from a firm called OmniVision, and the WSJ story adds credence to reports that the firm's plants in Japan may have been damaged in the tsunami, leaving Sony to pick up the slack.

Camera quality has always been Apple's achilles heel, with competing handsets (and, more recently, tablets) routinely besting Jobs & Co. for quality, and Sony have managed to squeeze an 8MP snapper into their most recent slimline handset, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. Could this be the boost Apple needs to snap with the big boys?
