Apple iPad controls 93 per cent of tablet market
iPad dominates ahead of second-generation unveiling
Just days ahead of the official unveiling of the second-generation Apple iPad confirmed for March 2nd new reports have suggested the current iPad controls 93 per cent of the tablet market.
The report by technology industry analysts ABI Research claimed that Apple was responsible for 93 per cent of the 4.5 million tablet devices that shipped in the third quarter of 2010. Whilst it is well known that Apple currently controls the lion’s share of the tablet market, the extent to which it dominates was previously unknown.
With a recent spate of high-end Android powered tablets being unveiled by the likes of Samsung, LG and Motorola, Apple’s share of the tablet market is expected to fall in the coming months despite the arrival of the iPad 2 which is believed to be heading for arrival with front and rear facing cameras and a slimmer form factor.
Senior Practise Director at ABI Research, Jeff Orr, said of the findings and Apple’s future market share: “Over time, Apple’s first-to-market iPad advantage will inevitably erode to some extent. ABI Research has been tracking media tablets since December 2009; future quarterly editions of this Market Data product will include market share tracking of all the major media tablet vendors.”
