With a previous combined weekly record topping the 857 million app download milestone, the new 1.2 billion landmark is a significant increase and follows the news from Google that 3.7 million Android devices were activated globally during the Christmas weekend.
With millions of new devices being activated and existing users having time to kill whilst off work, the festive week’s app download figures soared with the US leading the way with a combined Apple and Android download figure in the region of 509 million applications.
The figures, compiled by analyst firm Flurry showed that China sported the second highest number of downloads during the last week of December followed by the UK, Canada and Germany.
