Android to race ahead of iPhone in app downloads

Android grows in app downloads for 2011

Android decides to take a bite out of Apple

UK-based research firm Ovum has predicted that in 2011, Android app downloads will surpass those downloaded by iOS devices.
If this happens, it will be the first time Android tops Apple in the app download race. According to Ovum, downloads from Android devices will hit 8.1 billion by the end of this year.

On the other hand, iOS apps will lay claim to 6 billion downloads. However, its app downloads have grown just under three times as compared to 2.7 billion downloads in 2010.

However, the growth in Android app downloads is impressive given it saw only 1.4 billion downloads in 2010.

The total number of app downloads this year is estimated to be 18 billion by the end of the year, as compared to 7.4 billion at the end of 2010.

By 2015, Windows Phone OS is predicted to overtake BlackBerry in terms of number of app downloads and app revenues.
