Whilst Apple's iOS App Store surpassed the 400,000 app milestone in June 2011 before rocketing past the half a million mark Android's lax vetting policy and open source nature has seen the Google OS's app offering increase at a faster rate.
More than doubling in size in less than a year the Android market has seen its app availability increase from just 200,000 last April.
With more than 100,000 developers registered to create content for the Android platform which now caters to a strong tablet contingent as well as the smartphone base, a breakdown of available content has shown that an impressive 68 per cent of Android apps can be downloaded free of charge.
