Amazon could be set to take on the iPad 2 and the growing Android tablet army with a report suggesting that the online retail giant will launch a tablet in the summer.

The report by gdgt suggests that the device which could run on Android Honeycomb or its own custom operating system, will be built with the help of Samsung.

Talk of a slate from Amazon has intensified in recent months with analysts saying that an Amazon tablet could beat the iPad if such a device was launched.

Having recently launched the Amazon Appstore for Android apps, and the Amazon Cloud Player service, both could feature in any potential tablet device.

There is of course the small matter of Amazon's hugely successful Kindle service would surely have a big part to play as well.

The big-selling Kindle will apparently not suffer from the presence of a tablet, but it will be interesting to see if these rumours do materialise into anything.
