Amazon Kindle hits the iPhone
So why buy a Kindle?
Well, just weeks after the much-heralded Kindle 2 http://www.t3.com/news/amazon-kindle-2-now-official?=38065 was announced by Amazon, the company has sneaked out the Amazon Kindle App, effectively turning your iPhone into a mobile library.
The app is free, but the books certainly aren't. They cost around $9.99, although you can 'sample' the first chapter of a book for free. Unfortunately, you can't download them directly to your phone, instead you'll need to buy via a PC or Mac, then transfer over. Although Kindle owners can sync content between iPhone and the standalone device.
Obviously 20/20 vision is required to read War and Peace on the daily commute, but adjustment of text size is available, even if it does mean a sentence per screen and RSI from page turning. But there's a bigger problem than that - we don't 'officially' have Kindle in the UK, which means we don't know if the app is going to make it to the UK app store. We hope it does, although we suspect it could be held back until the Kindle finally makes its UK debut. Whenever that is.
