Amazon will unleash two new models of its Kindle Fire tablet next week, but will not be releasing a larger, 10-inch edition, scuppering rumours that it was ready to go mano-o-mano with Apple’s iPad.
The news comes from CNET, which says it’s spoken to ‘a person who has seen the products’. One of the 7-inch models will be a basic upgrade on the current Kindle Fire, with a rejigged UI and an even lower price tag, designed to compete with the bargain basement Google Nexus 7.
The other new Kindle Fire will apparently boast HDMI connectivity, a snappier processor and a camera. While no price details have been leaked, it would be unlikely that this tablet would be as cheap as its stablemate.
Both new tablets will be revealed next week in the US. The current Kindle Fire is now ‘sold out’ according to Amazon, with six million of the devices sold since its introduction last year.
