80GB PS3 release date nudged forward by a week

For gawd's sake don't buy anything until Friday

Despite Sony's announcement that the new 80GB PlayStation 3 console wouldn't be hitting these shores until August 27th, retailers including Play.com and Amazon.co.uk have put a shipping date of this Friday, the 22nd, on the updated hardware.

Very little about the new configuration is actually changing. It's a far cry from the 60GB models of last year - the latest models have shaved off USB ports, card slots and backwards compatibility in Sony's desperate bid to bring the price down to something that didn't cause Joe Public to turn an ugly shade of beige when confronted with it.

The strategy has been successful though, and with many exceptional PS3 titles on the very rapidly approaching horizon, there perhaps hasn't been a better tie to pick up a console. The 80GB model essentially offers an extra 40GB of storage space to store your PSN downloads, digital music photos and DivX videos on and will sell for the same price as the old one at £299.99.
