Next up in our countdown of the hottest 100 bits of tech on the planet is the UK's incoming super-fast broadband network
BT and Virgin are doing their best to bring the UK up to the kind of broadband speeds enjoyed in such high-tech titans as South Korea and, come to that, North Korea. Both are rolling out fibre-optic networks to an ever-expanding proportion of the populace, backed with around £830 million of government dosh.
BT has pledged to deliver 40- meg broadband to over two thirds of the country, whilst Virgin is doubling its speeds for most customers, and cutting the cost of its 100Mbps service.
